Sure looks like it from new images posted on Spanish site miblackberry.com, and frankly, we think it's the most flattering color combo we've seen to date. Then again, the phone is so frickin' huge in person that it could end up being a totally excessive amount of shiny, metallic plastic in your face when you crack it open -- but from the press shots, at least, color us impressed (pun intended). T-Mobile, any interest in this one, too?

Subscribe in a reader

RCA unveils 4GB / 8GB Lyra Slider PMP

Whoa, wait up. You’re telling us Audiovox hasn’t abandoned the RCA Lyra moniker entirely? Storming back from the grave the unknown is the Lyra Slider, a PMP that could definitely go for $29.99 on contract from any major carrier with just a dial-pad and a CDMA radio. As it stands, this media player arrives with 4GB or 8GB of capacity and plays back audio, video, FM radio and photo slideshows. Furthermore, you’ll find an integrated voice / media recorder, USB 2.0 port and a rechargeable battery good for up to 50 hours of music playback or 8 hours of video playback. Look for this to show up later in the fall for $79.99 (4GB) / $99.99 (8GB).

Subscribe in a reader

Toshiba's NB100 netbook coming to the UK

That Toshiba netbook we’ve seen in grainy video and semi-official fashion has gone and gotten all really-official today — at least in the UK. The minuscule laptop — dubbed the NB100 — will feature an 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 display, a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, WiFi, and will be available in either Ubuntu or Windows XP flavors (you’re surprised, right?). The NB100 will be offered in three colors, Cosmic Black, Champagne Gold, and Bright Silver, thus making its casing the only difference between this and every other middling, mediocre netbook on the market. Prices are set to start at £260 (or about $472), and the laptops will be on shelves this October.
Subscribe in a reader

Lenovo X200t swivel tablet hands-on

We’re torn. Lenovo kicks ass in the tablet space, and the X200t is no exception to that rule, but we were hoping for a little more “X200” and a little less traditional Lenovo tablet action. Compared to its straight-up X200 namesake, the X200t is mega heavy, due to a different battery, screen and internals. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just a letdown compared to the insanely great engineering that Lenovo poured into the X300 and X200. We’re also a little miffed that Lenovo hasn’t worked out a capacitive touch option yet, though they claim that the X200t’s dual-purpose touchscreen has been improved, including a method for switching off touch automatically when the pen is in close proximity to the screen, to allow for some palm resting. They were just showing pen-only units this evening, so we didn’t get to test that out. Everything else is traditional love-it-or-hate-it ThinkPad design, quality and touchpad-freeness.
Subscribe in a reader

The Vertical Bed — never coming to an IKEA near you

For those of you who like to lay in bed watching TV, but always manage to get a sore neck, Jamie O’Shea from the “Office for the development of Substitute Materials” has devised a solution: the Vertical Bed. Supported by a harness that is craftily secured under the clothing, nappers can catch up on beauty rest at any subway stop or back alley of their choosing. As an added bonus the wearer can be made impervious to the effects of the outside world through the use of noise canceling headphones and mirrored glasses, and the ensemble comes with an umbrella for convenient use in a variety of weather conditions. The only thing it appears to be missing from this performance art project is an anti-pick-pocketing force field — undoubtedly in the works. More photos after the break.

[Via we make money not art]

Continue reading The Vertical Bed — never coming to an IKEA near you

Subscribe in a reader

HP TouchSmart IQ504 Touchscreen PC

The HP TouchSmart IQ504 touchscreen PC bears at last established. With FLASH BIOS, there is no need to replace an EPROM component. Once downloaded, the upgrade utility fits on a floppy disc allowing the user to save, verify and update the system BIOS. A hard drive or a network drive can also be used to run the newer upgrade utilities. However, memory managers can not be installed while upgrading.
Most pre-Pentium motherboards do not have a Flash BIOS. The following instructions therefore do not apply to these boards. If your motherboard does not have a Flash BIOS (EEPROM) you will need to use an EPROM programmer to re-program the BIOS chip. See your dealer for more information about this.
Please read the following instructions in full before starting a Flash BIOS
upgrade:A. Create a Bootable Floppy (in DOS)
•With a non-formatted disk, type the following:
format a:/s
•If using a formatted disk, type:
sys a:
This procedure will ensure a clean boot when you are flashing the new BIOS.
B. Download the BIOS file
•Download the correct BIOS file by clicking on the file name of the BIOS file you wish to download.
•Save the BIOS file and the Flash Utility file in the boot disk you have created. Unzip the BIOS file and the flash utility file. If you don’t have an “unzip” utility, download the WinZip for Windows 95 shareware/ evaluation copy for that one time use from _www.winzip.com or _www.pkware.com. Most CD ROMs found in computer magazines, have a shareware version of WinZip on them.
•You should have extracted two files:
Flash BIOS utility eg: flash7265.exe (for example)
BIOS eg: 6152J900.bin (example)
Use the latest flash utility available unless otherwise specified (either on the BIOS update page or in the archive file). This information is usually provided.
C. Upgrade the System BIOS
During boot up, write down the old BIOS version because you will need to use it for the BIOS backup file name.
Place the bootable floppy disk containing the BIOS file and the Flash Utility in drive a, and reboot the system in MS-DOS, preferably Version 6.22
•At the A:> prompt, type the corresponding Flash BIOS utility and the BIOS file with its extension.
For example:
flash625 615j900.bin
•From the Flash Memory Writer menu, select “Y” to “Do you want to save BIOS?” if you want to save (back up) your current BIOS (strongly recommended), then type the name of your current BIOS and its extension after FILE NAME TO SAVE: eg: a:\613J900.bin
Alternatively select “N” if you don’t want to save your current BIOS. Beware, though, that you won’t be able to recover from a possible failure.
•Select “Y” to “Are you sure to program?”
•Wait until it displays “Message: Power Off or Reset the system”
Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system. If you write to BIOS but cannot complete the procedure, do not switch off, because the computer will not be able to boo, and you will not be given another chance to flash. In this case leave your system on until you resolve the problem (flashing BIOS with old file is a possible solution, provided you’ve made a backup before)
Make sure the new BIOS version has been loaded properly by taking note of the BIOS identifier as the system is rebooting.
For AMI BIOSOnce the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system holding the “END” key prior to power on until you enter CMOS setup. If you do not do this the first time booting up after upgrading the BIOS, the system will hang.
BIOS Update Tipsnote:1.Make sure never to turn off or reset your computer during the flash process. This will corrupt the BIOS data. We also recommend that you make a copy of your current BIOS on the bootable floppy so you can reflash it if you need to. (This option is not available when flashing an AMI BIOS).
2. If you have problems installing your new BIOS please check the following:
Have you done a clean boot?In other words, did you follow the above procedure for making a bootable floppy? This ensures that when booting from “A” there are no device drivers on the diskette. Failing to do a clean boot is the most common cause for getting a “Memory Insufficient” error message when attempting to flash a BIOS.
If you have not used a bootable floppy, insure a clean boot either by
a) pressing F5 during bootup
b) by removing all device drivers on the CONFIG.SYS including the HIMEM.SYS. Do this by using the EDIT command.
Have you booted up under DOS?Booting in Windows is another common cause for getting a “Memory Insufficient” error message when attempting to flash a BIOS. Make sure to boot up to DOS with a minimum set of drivers. Important: Booting in DOS does not mean selecting “Restart computer in MS-DOS Mode” from Windows98/95 shutdown menu or going to Prompt mode in WindowsNT, but rather following the above procedure (format a: /s and rebooting from a:\).
Have you entered the full file name of the flash utility and the BIOS plus its extension?Do not forget that often you will need to add a drive letter (a:\) before flashing the BIOS. Example: when asked for file name of new BIOS file which is on your floppy disk, in case you’re working from c:\ your will need to type a:\615j900.bin, rather than 615j900.bin only.
0 comments:

Subscribe in a reader

Symbian Application: Nokia Chat - Location based chatting

Nokia Beta Labs today unveiled Nokia Chat - a brand new location based chatting application for your S60 device. These towers, also called “base stations,” consist of radios, computerized switching equipment, and antennas that receive and transmit radiofrequency (RF) signals.

When a person makes a cellular phone call, a signal is sent from the phone’s antenna to the base station antenna. The base station responds to this signal by assigning it an available radiofrequency channel. Transmission and reception of these radio signals transfer the voice information to the base station. Next, the voice signals are sent to a switching center, which transfers the call to its destination. For additional information on the phones themselves, please see the American Cancer Society document, “Cellular Phones.”

Cellular phone towers are usually mounted either on top or on the side of existing structures, such as trees, water tanks, or tall buildings. The antennas need to be located high enough so they can adequately cover the area. Base stations usually range in height from 150-270 feet.

Cellular phones operate at the radiofrequency (RF) part of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is non-ionizing radiation. Other examples of the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum include AM and FM radio waves, microwaves, and infrared waves from heat lamps. Unlike x-rays and gamma rays (which are examples of ionizing radiation), radio waves have too little energy to break the bonds that hold molecules (such as DNA) in cells together. Similarly, since RF of this frequency contains relatively low energy, it does not enter tissues. At very high levels of exposure, RF can cause warming of tissues, much as a heat lamp does. The wavelength of cell phone waves is about one foot and the frequency is approximately 800 to 900 MHz, although newer models may use higher frequencies up to 2,200 MHz.

How Are People Exposed to Radiofrequency Energy From Cellular Phone Towers?

As people use cellular phones to make phone calls, signals are transmitted back and forth to the base station. The radio waves produced at the base station are emitted into the environment, where people can be exposed.

The energy from a cellular phone antenna, like that of other telecommunication antennas, is directed toward the horizon (parallel to the ground), with some downward scatter. Base station antennas use higher power levels than other types of land-mobile antennas, but much lower levels than radio and television broadcast stations. The power density decreases with increasing distance from the antenna. As a result, the level of exposure to radio waves at ground level is very low compared to the level close to the antenna.

Public exposure to radio waves from cellular phone antennas is slight for several reasons. The power levels are relatively low, the antennas are mounted at high above ground level, and the signals are transmitted intermittently, rather than constantly.

Agencies such as the National Council on Radiation Protections and Measurements, the International Radiation Protection Association, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American National Standards Institute, have established guidelines for exposure to RF radiation originating from cellular communications base stations. These guidelines were designed to protect workers, as well as the public, from potentially harmful radio frequency. The recommended exposure limits are in the range of .41-.45 milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm2) for cellular radiofrequencies.

Exposures that exceed these recommended standards can sometimes be encountered on the rooftops of buildings where base stations are mounted. If this is the case, access to these areas should be limited. The power density inside buildings where a base station is mounted is typically 10 to 100 times lower than the level outside depending on the construction materials of the building. Wood or cement block reduces the exposure level of RF radiation by a factor of about ten. The power density behind an antenna is hundreds to thousands of times lower than in front. Therefore, if an antenna is mounted on the side of a building, the exposure level in the room directly behind the wall is typically well below the recommended exposure limits.

Do Cellular Phone Towers Cause Cancer?

Humans generate electromagnetic fields internally as well as externally. The simple collision between 2 molecules is an electrical event. Since there is electrical activity inside the human body, the question arises as to whether radio waves emitted by cellular phone towers can influence cell function, and in particular whether they can cause cancer.

However, several theoretical considerations suggest that cellular phone towers are unlikely to cause cancer.

First, the energy level of radio waves is relatively low. Electromagnetic energy comes in “packages” that are referred to as photons. Photon energy is measured in electron volts (eV), the energy gained by an electron after accelerating over 1 volt. The energy in the photons depends directly on the frequency, and decreases as one moves down the electromagnetic spectrum. X-rays have about 1,000 eV of energy, while the photon energy of radio waves from cellular phone towers is about one millionth of an eV, not enough to alter molecules in the body.

A second issue has to do with wavelength. Radio waves have a wavelength of approximately 1 foot in air, and about 2 inches in body tissue. As a result, RF radiation can only be concentrated to about an inch or two in size. This makes it unlikely that the energy from radio waves could be concentrated on a small bit of tissue, affecting individual cells.

A third issue has to do with the magnitude of exposure. Measurements taken around typical cellular phone towers show ground level power densities well below the recommended limits. Moreover, public exposure near cell phone towers is not significantly different than background levels of RF radiation in urban areas from other sources, such as radio and television broadcast stations.

For these reasons, cell phone antennas or towers are unlikely to cause cancer.

What Does the Epidemiologic Evidence Say?

No human studies have focused specifically on cellular phone towers or even on radio waves more generally. Several studies have looked at the effects of radio waves and microwaves combined; these have generally not shown any increase in cancer, except for a US Air Force study that suggested an increase in brain tumors in association with radiofrequency/microwave exposure.

What Does the Animal Evidence Say?

A number of animal studies have been conducted, generally showing no carcinogenic (cancer-causing) effect of radio waves. Several experiments have used exposure levels that cause a rise in tissue temperature, and even in these studies, there was no increase in DNA mutations or in cancer. A recent review concluded that: “The scientific evidence indicates that exposure to radiofrequency radiation fields is not mutagenic and is therefore unlikely to act as an initiator of carcinogenesis.”

What Do the Expert Agencies Say?

The expert agencies that usually provide findings on carcinogenicity (whether something can cause cancer) – the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – have not issued findings on cellular phone towers.

The World Health Organization stated in 1993 that “the epidemiologic and comparative clinical studies do not provide clear evidence of detrimental health effects in humans from exposure to RF fields. Occupational exposure to RF will be at higher levels than that encountered by the general population, and, thus, there is less likelihood of health effects in the general population as a whole.”

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) offers the following information to individuals concerned about the safety of cellular phone towers (also known as wireless telephone base stations):

The electromagnetic RF signals transmitted from base station antennas stations travel toward the horizon in relatively narrow paths. For example, the radiation pattern for an antenna array mounted on a tower can be likened to a thin pancake centered around the antenna system. The individual pattern for a single array of sector antennas is wedge-shaped, like a piece of pie. As with all forms of electromagnetic energy, the power decreases rapidly as one moves away from the antenna. Therefore, RF exposure on the ground is much less than exposure very close to the antenna and in the path of the transmitted radio signal. In fact, ground-level exposure from such antennas is typically thousands of times less than the exposure levels recommended as safe by expert organizations. So exposure to nearby residents would be well within safety margins.

Cellular and PCS (Personal Communications Service) base stations in the United States are required to comply with limits for exposure recommended by expert organizations and endorsed by government agencies responsible for health and safety. Measurements made near cellular and PCS base station antennas mounted on towers have confirmed that ground-level exposures are typically thousands of times less than the exposure limits adopted by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission). In fact, in order to be exposed to levels at or near the FCC limits for cellular or PCS frequencies an individual would essentially have to remain in the main transmitted radio signal (at the height of the antenna) and within a few feet from the antenna. This is, of course, very unlikely to occur.

When cellular and PCS antennas are mounted on rooftops, RF levels on that roof or on others near by would probably be greater than those typically encountered on the ground. However, exposure levels approaching or exceeding safety guidelines should be encountered only very close to or directly in front of the antennas. In addition, for sector-type antennas, typically used for such rooftop base stations, RF levels to the side and in back of these antennas are insignificant. General guidelines on antenna installations and circumstances that might give rise to a concern about a facility’s conformance with FCC regulations can be found in A Local Government Official’s Guide to Transmitting Antenna RF Emission Safety: Rules, Procedures, and Practical Guidance. This Guide can be accessed on the Internet at: www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety.

Do Cellular Phone Towers Cause Any Other Health Problems?

While high levels of radiofrequency waves can cause a warming of tissues, cellular phone towers do not yield exposure at levels sufficient to cause this effect. There is no evidence in published scientific reports that cell phone towers cause any other health problems.

What Do I Do If I’ve Been Exposed to Cellular Phone Towers?

As noted above, cell phone towers pose little risk under ordinary conditions. There is no test to measure whether you have been exposed to RF radiation from cellular phone towers. However, if there is a cellular phone tower mounted near your home or office, you can ask a government agency or private firm to measure the radiofrequency field strength near the tower to ensure that it is within the acceptable range. If you have additional health concerns, please consult your doctor.

The Bottom Line…

Cellular phone towers, like cellular phones themselves, are a relatively new technology, and we do not yet have full information on health effects. In particular, not enough time has elapsed to permit epidemiologic studies. There are some theoretical reasons why cellular phone towers would not be expected to increase cancer risk, and animal studies of RF have not suggested a risk of cancer. People who are concerned can ask for measurements of RF near cellular phone towers to be sure exposures do not exceed recommended limits.

Additional Resources

National Organizations and Web Sites

The following organizations can provide additional information and resources.*

Federal Communications Commission
RF Safety Program, Office of Engineering and Technology, 2006
Internet Address: www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/

Food and Drug Administration
Cell Phone Facts: Consumer Information on Wireless Phones, 2005
Internet Address: www.fda.gov/cellphones/

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Internet Address: www.niehs.nih.gov/external/faq/cellular.htm

World Health Organization
Electromagnetic fields and public health: extremely low frequency fields and cancer. 2001.
Internet Address: www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs263/en/

* Inclusion on this list does not imply endorsement by the American Cancer Society

References

ANSI-C95.1, 1982, American National Standards Institute. Looks and feels similar to the original but a bit lighter in weight. The 2.0 software interface is nicer than any of the previous ones, and applications are impressive especially in the graphics they have- which are above and beyond anything ever seen on a cellphone. The new black case is a fingerprint magnet, so be careful when you use it, and maybe even go out and get a case for it. Overall, I think this is a very worthy successor to the original iPhone based on my quick first look at it.

Ok, that was a little first take. Stay tuned as Aidan should soon have a review up on his on own iPhone 3G once he gets it in the coming days. In the meantime, how have your experiences been with the iPhone 3G and/or the 2.0 software on the iPhone 1 or iPod Touch (that is of course assuming you were able to get it from iTunes and onto your iPhone or iPod Touch). Also any apps you guys would reccomend for other users from the App Store? Let us know in the comments.

Subscribe in a reader

A Look At S60 Menu Organization

One of the things that makes S60 so great is the ability to customize, down to the main menu, how your phone looks. I’ve already given you a peek into my Crap folder, to see all the various apps and icons that S60 throws at you that I find completely useless or redundant. I also shared my main menu with you, along with what I feel is the most logical layout and organization.

To finish this out, I thought it would be constructive to take a peek at what S60 believes is the most optimal menu layout, by giving my Nokia N95-3 a hard reset and checking out where things are, straight from the factory. I took a few screenshots, and together let’s go through and attempt to find a method to their madness.

Here’s the main menu of the N95-3 with firmware v20.0.011, fresh off the reset:

To be honest, this is actually somewhat logical. However, why would Gallery be front and center, when the phone has a dedicated Gallery button? That seems really redundant to me, and not necessarily what I’d like to highlight when someone first hits the menu. Although I personally put Contacts in Crap, since I set an Active Standby shortcut to it, I can understand that a newcomer to S60 would feel comfortable seeing it on the main screen. The same with Messaging, though I keep Messaging in my menu, as well.

Maps seems logical to have in the main menu, though I think it should be grouped together with the GPS and Landmarks apps, I can see how those might be confusing to a newcomer. Next we have the Music folder, which I usually rename to the more all-encompassing Media. Let’s see what’s in there:

Wow, that folder is jam-packed. Again, as noted before, it’s interesting that the Music Store icon is present, given that this is a U.S.-focused handset, and the Music Store hasn’t launched here, or anywhere in North or South America. Guess that means we should either expect it to launch soon, or not expect another N95-3 firmware update anytime soon. I’m betting on the latter.

I’m also a bit peeved that the Nokia Internet Radio application isn’t pre-installed yet, given that the N95 is one of the tested-and-approved devices. It’s also not currently listed in the Download! client, meaning that a newcomer likely won’t know about it.

Moving back to the main menu, Video Center is right there next to Gallery. Personally, I find Video Center to be a complete and utter waste of space/resources, because even if I ’subscribe’ to a channel, I have to manually download any video to watch it. What’s also interesting is that the Video Center doesn’t throw up the possibly-incompatible warning that the Podcasting app does for certain videos, such as Driving with the Guru. I can’t help but wish that the Video Center was simply incorporated into the Podcasting app somehow, as they seem to do alot of the same functions.

Search has also somehow been gifted with a spot on the main menu, which is silly, particularly on the N95, because it’s hard-coded to be the first thing in the Active Standby screen. It would actually take 4 clicks (not counting using the numbered shortcuts) to use this in the main menu, whereas the Active Standby gives the same experience.

Web being in the main menu is something I don’t really have issue with, either. Like with Maps, I would prefer to have all of the web-related apps in a single folder, but I can admit that’s more of a nit-pick. I’m extremely annoyed that the N-Gage preview is still coming installed on the N95 (and this firmware was made available *after* the official launch), and even MORE annoyed that you can’t remove it without causing problems with the full version. The only way I don’t have an issue with this being here is if it were removed and replaced with the full version, once you download that. It *is* somewhat useful to quickly download the full N-Gage app, but after that, it needs to be gone.

Tools is next, and it contains two sub-folders, Connectivity and Utilities. Here’s what comes in Tools by default:

Hmmm, seems to me that Bluetooth and WLAN wizard (can’t they just label it ‘WiFi’ already?) should belong in Connectivity, no? Aren’t they basically ways to connect with something else? Sync, Profiles, and Settings make sense in the Tools folder, I suppose, as does Log (if you really need the extra features not given with the Send key). File Manager is logical, as well, since, after all, it’s a tool.

Here’s what’s in the Connectivity folder:

Aside from the Wireless Keyboard, I can tolerate all of these as ‘Connectivity’ related apps. As noted, I think the GPS-related ones should be relocated, along with Home Media, but I can see the logic in them being here. Wireless Keyboard should be in Office, really.

Moving on to the Utilities folder:

First off, Tools and Utilities are basically the same thing. Since you obviously can’t ship a product with a Crap folder, why not label this System or something else that indicates you may want to look in here, but you won’t find anything useful? That being said, 1-touch should be in the Tools base, along with Voice Comm. and Memory. Switch, in my opinion, is better suited to the Connectivity menu. Help and About are both completely 100% useless, though admittedly necessary simply for completeness. Device Mgr. should remain in here, as long as the folder is renamed. 3-D tones should simply be eliminated completely. No one uses it, and I’ve heard it causes problems, anyways. It’s a gimmick, plain and simple.

Back to the menu, we’re up to Applications:

Again, camera is front and center, which is silly, given the dedicated camera button. Why wouldn’t Calendar and Calculator be dropped into the Office folder? Aren’t they office/organizer type applications? The same with clock (though obviously, some, like myself, use it often). The App manager, frankly, is really the only one that makes sense in this folder. We have Share Online, but again, it’s not the latest version (which has now been available for a while, and yet oddly not included in the latest firmware) and it’s not even in the Media folder, which makes zero sense.

Themes, which is also now accessible through Settings, should be in the Tools folder. Ignore Screenshot, I installed that for the purposes of, well, taking screenshots. MyNokia is another one like the Music Store. It’s not available in the U.S., so it’s a completely useless icon. Let me download it later when you’ve enabled it in my area, please.

Moving into the Media folder…

Somewhat like the earlier Music folder, this has a very small amount of items. Recorder is technically music, though I would say it belongs in the Office folder, if anywhere. RealPlayer and Flash Player are OK in here, as is Lifeblog (though it’s since been replaced on the PC side with Nokia Photos), and Activation Keys, based on a previous commenter’s use of it, should be in the Tools folder, or Utilities (again, assuming that’s renamed to System). I still say that Music and Media should be combined, to eliminate an entire folder of confusion for users.

The next folder, Office, is the only one which I have no fault in, other than the fact that it’s buried in the Applications folder:

All of these items are clearly used for mostly Office/business-related tasks, and this is, sadly, the most logical folder on an Nseries device, and there you have it.

I’ll confess, I thought that the default menu layout was *much* more illogical than it really is, so kudos to Nokia and S60 for making improvements. There are definitely some completely silly placements, but overall, I’d have to say that they’re making strides.

Edit - In looking back, I noticed that the Nokia N76’s firmware update last August put things in roughly the same place. If I didn’t already have them setup how I want them, I’d hard reset the other S60 phones on my desk to see how consistent things really are across the board.

Subscribe in a reader

SkyForceReloaded.v1.0.S60.SymbianOS

<img style="cursor:pointer; To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart withthis reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.Thisreserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time.

Turn Down Screen Brightness: The screen is one of the most power-consuming parts of the mobile phone. The lower the brightness, the lesser power it needs. Keep it as low as you can, so long as you can still see it! Also, some phones like the E61 and the BlackBerry Pearl come with auto-adjust features that increase the brightness in brightly lit areas and dim it in low-light areas. If you're setting the brightness low, make sure that auto-adjust is turned off.

Don't Use Animated Wallpapers or Screensavers: The animations in wallpapers and screensavers can drain a bit of battery as they also consume a wee bit of CPU. Turn them off.

Turn Off Keypad Lights: If you've been using the phone for a while, you may be able to use the keys without seeing them. If this is the case, the keypad backlight can be turned off. However, not a lot of phones support this, but it's worth considering if your phone does.

Decrease Screen Standby Time Out: The time till your screen dims out and/or gets turned off is configurable in most phones. 10 seconds is good, 5 seconds is better. Set it as low as you can go without it becoming inconvenient.

Close Background Applications: If you're using a Smartphone, close applications that you don't need. Applications that stay active in the background use up a bit of CPU, which uses up battery. Make sure you 'exit' the applications from the menu, not by pressing the 'End' key, as that merely puts the application in the background. In Series 60 Smartphones (mostly Nokias), hold down the 'Menu' key to get a list of all applications running in the background to close them. In Windows Mobile 5 phones, open the 'Memory' application and check the 'Running programs' tab to close them.

Turn Off Vibration: Probably the second most power-consuming feature of any mobile phone is the built-in vibration alert. See if you can do without it.

Turn Down Ringer Volume, Keypad Tones and Speaker During Calls: If you're mostly indoors, like in the office or at home, a low ringer volume can go a bit towards saving your battery. Most phones also have DTMF-like keypad tones, which are not necessary if the keypad has decent tactile feedback. I keep them turned off most of the time — you can try it too. Volume of the earpiece when you're on a call can also be lowered, and that helps too.

Disable Voice Clarity / EFR / Voice Privacy: Almost all phones now do Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) for voice communication that consumes a little more power. In most cases, the enhanced quality of EFR doesn't make a difference thanks to the high noise levels in our city. Keep it off, you probably won't miss it. Some phones (mostly Samsungs) have a 'voice privacy' feature which can also be turned off to save battery.

Turn off 3G / GPRS / EDGEMost 3G/UMTS/WCDM: A phones keep searching for 3G coverage by default. In India, they'll keep searching till 2008, draining your battery, so go to the network selection screen and choose GSM-only. If your phone has a secondary camera near the screen, it's a 3G phone. Check your phone’s specs on the website if you aren't sure. Sometimes, even regular GPRS or EDGE connections stay active in the back, so make sure you specifically disconnect when you're done browsing the web.

Use Bluetooth and WiFi Only While Transferring: If you only use Bluetooth occasionally to transfer files to and from other devices, there's probably no point keeping it on all the time. Most phones only come with an on/off setting for Bluetooth, unlike the 'Turn on for 10 minutes' setting available for Infrared in some phones (mostly Sony Ericssons). People tend to forget about Bluetooth being left on after transferring the file — avoid doing this. Same goes for WiFi, if you're phone has that.

Here's another tip — find a USB cable if your phone supports recharging via USB: The Motorola RAZR/KRZR/SLVRs and most Windows Mobile Smartphones have a standard miniUSB slot that can use the same cable as most digital cameras. You're more likely to find one of these lying around somewhere than a charger for your phone, unless it's a Nokia, of course.

Finally, if you've tried everything else above then the only remedy will be don't use the phone too much.

Subscribe in a reader

Free iPhone Unlocking Solution Released

A team of hackers attempting to unlock Apple Inc.'s iPhone for use with GSM-based wireless carriers other than AT&T appear to have finally succeeded in their efforts, and last night began distributing their solution as a free download via several websites.

Dubbed "iUnlock," the SIM unlocking tool represents the fruits of a multi-month effort on the part of the unofficial "iPhone Dev Team" -- a community of independent contributors who've banded together to discover and develop additional uses for the inaugural Apple handset.

Unlike commercial efforts from groups such as iPhoneSIMfree and UniquePhones, iUnlock was released Tuesday evening as a free download, and has since begun to spread rapidly across the web. Several iPhone owners and members of Apple online communities claim to have tested and verified the solution as genuine.

In its current state, however, the iUnlock solution is not for the technically-challeneged or faint-of-heart. It requires a "jailbroken" iPhone, rudimentary knowledge of using a unix terminal, experience with SFTP and some patience. Some tutorials on how to apply the hack have also begun to crop up, but they're currently rough around the edges.

Several more user-friendly installation guides are believed to be under development at the present time, as is a version of iUnlock that will be based around an installer for the less technical savvy.

Unlocking mobile phones for one's own use, for instance to place calls with a different carrier, appears to be legal under an exemption of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. However, the same may not be true for the specific steps taken by the iPhone Dev Team's unlocking solution, which has not been scrutinized in that regard.

Because the iPhone is GSM-based, U.S. consumers who unlock the phone will be limited in their alternative wireless carrier choices to just T-Mobile, the only other national GSM-based service provider outside of AT&T. Internationally, however, the unlocking solution would seem more compelling due to the proliferation of GSM-based networks and carriers overseas.

iunlock.zip
Subscribe in a reader

SuperMiners from Infinite Dreams and find a promising game

Now this looks pretty good from the screenshots, and I was half expecting a huge run-around platform game with shades of Mario. So, much as I love the Repton/Boulderdash style of gaming, my first thought was that Super Miners was not what I was expecting.

What we have here is the classic 'collect all the diamonds in a mine' game. You’ve got dirt you can dig through, and anything that the dirt was holding up falls down, be it one of those diamonds, or some nasty boulders… which have a habit of rolling away from you when they land on something that’s not perfectly flat. And, truth be told, this is a great game genre, and Super Miners carries it off really well. I guess that in attempting to make the game sound marketable, they forgot that they need to tell you exactly what the game is about. You could argue that the demo version of the game deals with that, but I’m not convinced.

Anyway, as I said, this genre of game is one I really enjoy, so it’s time to get into the one problem with Super Miners on UIQ – and to be fair it’s the same problem that any arcade game has on UIQ. Input. There’s no handy little joystick to move your character around the screen, so you’re left with an area in the touchscreen that acts as your direction keys. You have to tap this to move either Dr Drill or his beautiful daughter Miss Rusty – you can choose which miner you want to play. It’s unwieldy at best, and while it never gets as far as unplayable, it does detract from the game.

You can redefine the hard keys that are around your UIQ machine, but for some reason you can’t use the up or down jog dial (forward and back are fine). This would be a great way to control yourself through the caves, but alas you’re left with tapping the on-screen buttons, which does take you out of 'the zone' when you’re playing (to focus on where your stylus tip is).

And so to the game, which looks lovely and reacts well to the direct taps on the screen. You start with a gentle introduction set of levels, with helpful signs that take you through all the physics of the game. Once you pass these levels, it turns into a right old puzzler, with you having to make choices on which one block is the key to the entire level, and if you should push it left or right. Choose correctly and you get another puzzle to solve, and eventually you finish the level – choose wrong and you’ll need restart the level again, which is going to happen a lot.

Super Miners is a great game, with a lot of thought put behind it and requiring a lot of thought to complete. Unfortunately it is let down slightly by the control system, so while it’s a good game, I would recommend you try the demo first to see if you can live with the control system.

InfiniteDreams.SuperMiners.v1.07.S60.SymbianOS.Cracked.Read.NFO-BiNPDA.sas

Subscribe in a reader
